Dirty Whores

I read The Great Gatsby and hated it. I have realized that I despise stories about affairs that break up both engagements and marriages.

This includes, but is in no way limited to:

The Office
House
The Great Gatsby

House is a little less dirty...he did refuse to break up the marriage in the end...

Sweet little Jim is the one who totally broke up an engagement.

I'm with Hannah regarding House (although that situation was indeed kind of messy and frustrating).

Even though I would no longer claim to like The Office, I still feel the need to defend Jim--but only because I have a couple of (now-married) real-life friends who say that the trajectory of Pam and Jim's relationship is pretty similar to their own.

The thing about Pam's previous engagement is that, well, it was really messed up. Whatshisface liked being with Pam, but he didn't really care about her--he didn't value her as an individual, but only in terms of what he gained from being with her. Jim stepped in and gave her someone who actually cared about her as a person.

(There are plenty of other things that bother me about their idealized fictional romance, though. I did a little bit of rant and delete. I'll save that for the Cynics Club meetings.)

I am not blaming the fictional people performing these dirty acts. I am just angry that the people write these stories with the intent of making me/us want the marriage or engagement to end. I don't care that the marriage might have issues or if the other couple would be "better" or if the engagement shouldn't succeed to marriage anyway. I hate it when the point of the story is to want it not to work because you like the other couple better.

I like House. And I like the idea of him loving Stacy. I love Jim and Pam being together. And I wanted the people in The Great Gatsby to be happy. I just hate the way their happiness takes place.

Have you read 'Jane Eyre?'
You'd probably hate it.

Hmm...

Well then, much to my chagrin, you may not find yourself like Their Eyes Were Watching God so much. Normally I'd refrain from telling you that there is more than one divorce in that book, but the back cover does as much, so I don't feel obligated to keep it a surprise.

Great Gatsby did stink, yes. Though my distaste for it was more general than yours, I think.

You ever read any Rob Bell? I can't help but feel more edified and complete when I pick him up.

I never made it past the beginning of Jane Eyre. Now I am glad I didn't.

Thanks for the heads up, Mark. I have read some Rob Bell, yes. I was just wanting to read classics. Stories. I am (re-)reading some Shane Claiborne right now, too, but I wanted some lighter, less thought-provoking material.
